When American Idol officially announced this season’s panel of four judges, the show captured public attention, especially since Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj—two of the judges—were known to dislike each other. Many believed that the “feud” between diva Mariah Carey and the “chameleon” DJ would stir up drama for the show. But it turned out they were wrong.

Nicki Minaj proved that she alone could create plenty of drama. The DJ threatened to walk out if her favorite contestant was the first to be eliminated during the live broadcast on Thursday, March 14. In fact, she stood up and left the judges’ table.

Nicki Minaj was visibly upset and left her seat when she saw that her favorite contestant, Curtis Finch Jr.—once considered one of the contenders for the title—was in the bottom two. Curtis Finch Jr. and Devin Velez received the fewest votes from the audience.

Judge Keith Urban partially agreed with Nicki, admitting he was also shocked by the situation. But Nicki’s fears were realized when Curtis received the fewest votes among the top 10 contestants. At that point, she jumped out of her seat. However, Curtis still had a chance to stay in the competition by performing a song to gain unanimous approval from the judges.

Curtis chose the song “I Believe I Can Fly,” showcasing his impressive vocals. The song had previously helped him secure a spot in the top 10. Nicki appeared sulky while Randy Jackson and Keith Urban had a tense discussion, and Mariah Carey focused on the contestant’s performance.

Throughout the season, the judges only have one opportunity to save a contestant, so they must deliberate carefully before making a final decision.

Randy Jackson revealed, “Unfortunately, we’re not unanimous.” The audience booed upon hearing Jackson’s statement. But perhaps Curtis needs to diversify his performances beyond slow-tempo R&B.
