Elon Musk has set off a stir with a bold statement about potentially banning Apple devices across his companies. This comes in light of Apple’s announcement involving its latest iOS update, which has been billed as possibly “the best iPhone update in years.” Just yesterday, Apple unveiled some of the new features set to roll out in iOS 18, sparking a reaction from the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who expressed his thoughts on X.
The anticipated iOS 18 update from Apple is designed to harness the capabilities of artificial intelligence more robustly than before. According to the company, the update will integrate ChatGPT into the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia systems. This will allow for a seamless experience where “Apple is integrating ChatGPT access into experiences within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to access its expertise – as well as its image – and document-understanding capabilities – without needing to jump between tools.”
Among the innovative features, Apple Intelligence is set to enhance the Memories feature in Photos by creating movies with their own narrative arcs. Furthermore, a novel “Clean Up” tool will be capable of identifying and removing unwanted objects from the background of your photos.
Additionally, Siri is expected to undergo significant improvements to become “even more natural, contextually relevant and personal.” Apple is also introducing system-wide Writing Tools in iOS 18, which will help users rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across Mail, Notes, Pages, and even third-party apps.
Apple has emphasized privacy in its rollout of these features, particularly with the integration of ChatGPT: “Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT – their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account.” For those less familiar, ChatGPT is a technology developed by OpenAI, a prominent American AI research organization.
Despite Apple’s commitment to user privacy, Elon Musk has expressed severe reservations. He warns that integrating OpenAI into Apple’s operating system would constitute “an unacceptable security violation.” Musk went on to say on X, “If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies.”
He further added, “And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.” This tweet quickly sparked a flurry of reactions online, with many users suggesting that Musk should perhaps develop a Tesla-branded phone.
