Gordon was furious after being substituted in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Brentford last weekend, although he later apologised to Howe for his outburst.
Howe stated: “Part of me understood why he acted the way he did.
“I didn’t condone it. You don’t want to see any player react like that because, eventually, you will have a team that looks like it doesn’t have the discipline that it needs.”
“Based on Anthony going down grabbing his ankle and the fact that there were seconds remaining on the clock, I decided to try to do what I felt I needed to do to win the game.
“He needed to accept it and, if he had a problem, come to see me privately. the is how I believed he should have reacted in the situation.
“Yes, he admitted that he was too emotional.
“But it’s a young athlete who is learning the game while also learning about us. I have no issue with him.”
Newcastle will return to action on Wednesday, going to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
